Dear Phil:

I just got around to reading the Richard Abrams article
you sent me. It is unusual in recounting threats to academic
integrity from the left as well as from the military aspect of
Government. In my opinion, the threats from the left are more
serious, because the Government examples cited all concern specific
agencies applying helpfulness-to-their-mission criteria to what
that agency funds, while the leftists want the universities to forbid
people to do research in or teach what they disapprove of.
I don't know to what extent either threat has resulted in actual
harm.

One example is Michael Levin of New York City University
being barred from teaching required courses because of an
article he published in an Australian journal that was attacked
as racist. I think he has a thick skin, but I imagine others
were intimidated into trimming their sails.

{\it Accuracy in Academia} which would presumably publish
complaints about leftists threats to research freedom hasn't
published any that I remember in the two or three years I have
subscribed. They do publish threats to freedom of speech and
press in addition to their complaints about far left propaganda
in courses.

Best Regards,
